Katavi National Park
Katavi National Park is the third largest park in Tanzania. The wildlife is untouched and unspoiled of all the parks in Tanzania. The size of the park is 4,471 sq kms. Katavi National Park was established in 1974.
The park is located in the remote south west part of Tanzania, where the rift valley waters flow into Lake Rukwa.
The park also holds River Katuma and Lake Katavi and Lake Chada.
The animals that you can view are herds of buffaloes, hippos, elephants and variety of bird life. During the rainy season, the lakes and rivers are filled with varied bird life and animals coming for water.
Katavi’s most singular wildlife spectacle is provided by its hippos. Towards the end of the dry season, up to 200 individuals might flop together in any riverine pool of sufficient depth. And as more hippos gather in one place, so does male rivalry heat up – bloody territorial fights are an everyday incident.
Mahale Mountains National Park
Mahale Mountains National Park is a park on the western park of Tanzania, inhabiting around 900 endangered chimpanzees. Gombe Stream National Park is north of Mahale Mountains National Park. It is 1,650 sq kms in size.
The park is borders by Lake Tangayika, world’s longest lake. This lake is also the second deepest and least polluted fresh water lake. You can see over 1,000 species of fishes in the lake.
Mahale Mountains National Park is accessible all year round, however, the best time for you to visit is during the dry season, which falls between May to October. During the dry season, you will be able to see chimpanzees in large numbers.
Apart from Chimpanzee tracking, you can also perform hiking to the Mahale Mountains National Park’s highest point at 8,096 ft, called Nkungwe peak, relax at the shores of Lake Tangayika, Snorkeling, culture tours and sport fishing.
Mahale Mountains National Park was inhabited by Batongwe and Holoholo tribes with 22,000 and 12,500 people respectively, recorded in 1987. However, these tribes were relocated outside the park before establishing it as a national park in 1985.
