Mgahinga National Park

Mgahinga National Park is national park in the southwest of Uganda. It was established in 1991 and Mgahinga National Park contains a size of 33.9 sq kms.

Furthermore, Mgahinga National Park is situated in Virunga Mountains. You can view three inactive volcanoes, namely, Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabyinyo.
Moreover, The altitude of the park is between 2,227 to 4,127 meters and is part of the River Nile. The Mgahinga National Park is connected to the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in Congo.

You can reach the park in about 15 kms by road south of the town of Kisoro and approximately 55 kms by road west of Kabale, the largest city in the sub-region.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is a part in the southwest of Uganda. Therefore, the park is part of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest that extends through to Congo, next to Virunga National Park.
Furthermore, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is around 321 sq kms in size and only accessible by foot. The park is also part of the World Heritage Site.

Apart from Gorillas, you can see around 120 species of mammals, 348 species of birds and 220 species of butterflies. you can also view 27 species of frogs, chameleons, geckos and many endangered species.
As a result, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park has around 400 Bwindi gorillas, half of world’s population of endangered mountain gorillas. The park also has chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, hornbill and turacos birds.

Day 1
Kigali International Airport to Kigali City

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, meet, greet by your driver/ guide and transfer to hotel in Kigali city.

Day 2
Kigali City to Volcanoes National Park to Mgahinga National Park

After breakfast, proceed to Volcanoes National Park in Musanze Town. The drive is around 2.5 hours. Brief tour of Dian Fossey Museum.

After hot lunch, drive north to Rwanda and Uganda Border (Cyanika Border). The drive will be around 50 minutes.

After immigration clearance, proceed to Mgahinga National Park via Kisoro Town to Southwest of Uganda. The drive is around 45 minutes.

Dinner and overnight

Day 3
Uganda Gorilla Trek

After breakfast, proceed for Uganda Gorilla Trek to Mgahinga National Park (Gorilla Trek permit required).

After the trek, return to the hotel for hot lunch. Later, relax at the lodge.

Alternatively, perform Batwa ‘Pygmy’ Village tour at additional cost.

Dinner and overnight.

• Trekking can take from two to six or more hours if the gorillas move before the park rangers locate them the next morning

• The guides stop frequently to allow trekkers a chance to rest and take photos along the way

• An eventually, our experienced trackers, who have spent their entire lives in or close to this forest, soon bring us up close with one of the Gorilla families

• Upon sighting the gorillas, you will stay with them for a magical one-hour as they go about their daily life, feeding, playing, resting; raising their young;

Day 4
Uganda to Rwanda (Kigali City)

After breakfast, return to Kigali via Uganda and Rwanda Border.

Later, perform Genocide Memorial Museum Tour with lunch.

Important Tips

Mgahinga National Park is a high altitude area of over 2,400 meters above sea level.
It is extremely chilly in the early mornings and evenings – warm clothing is therefore necessary.
While trekking, it can rain unexpectedly – it is necessary therefore to have:
• Water-proof clothing (jacket, with hood + trousers);
• Waterproof Zip-Lock bags for Cameras/Film/Passports/Money, e.t.c.;
• Hand Gloves (warm and water-proof), to keep hands off from rain and dripping vegetation;
• as well as protect from stinging nettles;
• Hiking boots – with good mud-grip are most appropriate, especially in wet weather;
• Gaiters – to protect your trek trouser legs and boots against mud/wetness;
• Small hand/face towel, to wipe sweat off your face during the trek.
