Kilimanjaro Mountain is highest free standing mountain in African located in Tanzania. Mount Kilimanjaro is dormant volcanic mountain and therefore, it is preferred for trekking and is 5,895 meters high above sea level.
The mountain has 3 volcanic cones called the Shira, Kibo and Mawenzi. Mount Kilimanjaro is part of the Kilimanjaro National Park.
Kilimanjaro Mountain has multiple trekking or climbing routes such as Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Umbwe, Rongai and many more. The most famous trekking routes are Marangu, Machame and Lemosho.
Marangu Route is also called as Coca-Cola route. It is the oldest and famous route for climbers. The route is considered to be the easiest compared to other routes. It is the only route that offers huts – dormitory type accommodation, to sleep during the climb.
Machame Route is also called as Whiskey Route. This route is turning to be more popular compared to Marangu Route. The trek is steeper and hard compared to Marangu but you also has more days to climb. Machame route is scenically beautiful.
The route starts from the south gate and east down the southern part of Moutain Kilimanjaro.
Lemosho Route is one of the newer routes established by the authorities. The route starts from the west, passing through Shira Ridge and to Shira camp. Finally it joins into Machame trek. Lemosho Route is also considered to be scenic.
